Executive Spotlight: Leslie Chun, MD
Chief Executive Officer, Hawai‘i Pacific Health Medical Group Dr. Chun joined Hawai'i Pacific Health in the Fall of 2019 when the HPH Medical Group was formed. This group brings together over 600 HPH employed and independent physicians under one group structure. In his new role as Chief Executive Officer of HPH Medical Group, Dr. Chun will collaborate with existing HPH leadership and physicians to ensure that we provide our community with high-quality care and exceptional patient experiences across the organization. His motivation as a leader at HPH comes from his love for building teams that tackle difficult issues. “That’s what gets me really excited. I also love bringing people together to accomplish great things as a collective unit. It is truly an honor to be in this role.” His values as a leader are integrity, teamwork, and tenacity in making sure we’re always doing what is right for every patient, every time. “I care a lot about doing what is clinically right for our patients.” Dr. Chun was born and raised in Hawai'i and spent much of his younger adult life across the U. S. mainland where he completed his medical studies and residency. He recognizes a number of important people who have helped to craft him throughout his life. “Various family members and physician leaders have invested tremendous amounts of one on one time with me to create who I am today. My parents are a key inspiration. They taught me to believe anything is possible, truly anything.” Others invested their time in him as a medical student. “My first mentor was at UCLA while I was in the MD MBA Program, who spent their lunches with me in the summer to talk and think together. The Chief of Internal Medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital where I completed my internship and residency would have monthly dinners with me, and the CEO at a hospital I previously worked for, took the time to meet with me once a month for five years to talk about my work and development.” If he could give his younger self advice, it would be to DREAM. "Anything is possible, if you're willing to put your time and energy into it. Doing tough things is important because it builds your character," he says. "The tougher it is the better it is for you." These days, Dr. Chun finds great pride and joy in his family and he tries to instill the same advice in his children. "That's what is most important in my life, my family." He enjoys spending time with his three children and continues his leadership role at home. Last year, he coached his two older kids’ (ages 7 and 10) basketball teams and both had undefeated seasons. This taught them the importance of team building and showed them that they are able to accomplish more as a team than they would have individually. Lately, Dr. Chun and his family enjoy playing card games given the stay-at-home orders. "It’s been fun! COVID has taken out many distractions and brought my family even closer; building that core unit is so important to me." During the coronavirus pandemic, Dr. Chun gains inspiration from within the organization. “I’ve been spending time with HPH Executives such as Ray (Vara), Martha (Smith) and Melinda (Ashton), and I’m truly amazed. Each of them have important skills and abilities that I’ve grown a great appreciation for as a leader.” He now strives to invest his time in the next group of physician leaders at the HPH Medical Group by doing leadership case studies to help grow their business acumen and leadership abilities to think through some tough issues. In training the next generation, every time there is something difficult, he uses it as an opportunity to unite. "What are you going to strengthen when things are breaking apart? What are we rebuilding as we are tackling the problem?" These tough times have brought many tough discussions, but he chooses to focus on the process of how these challenges are unifying us a collective group. Lastly, Dr. Chun shared the following words of encouragement: "We’re in a time of unknown and uncertainty, but the future is BRIGHT." With the right team, the right people, and the right culture, he believes that as an entity, state, and HPH 'ohana we can accomplish a lot and keep moving forward. "It’s a time to lead, change, adapt, re-sort what’s important, and focus on what drives us forward. Now is the time to strengthen our connectivity with our family and our bond with colleagues." |
