There is more to my life story! My maternal grandfather, Lau Kam Sai, owned property along Iwilei road where my mother, Alice Lau Lo, spent her early childhood, over 100 years ago.
That's not all. My father, William Lo, ran the Lo family soda fountain/ice cream parlor/magazine stand called Aala Park Inn, at the edge of Aala Park. I recall going down to the store with my brothers with mom's Oldsmobile to visit dad. We loved going to the popcorn machine and putting our hand up the dispenser to get whatever crumbs we could. This big popcorn machine was near the bus stop and our parents did not approve our antics!
We were standing on Iwilei Road and just so excited that both parents lived and worked where I was coming back to do a presentation. It’s as if it was god sent! The residents' eyes opened up wide when they heard my father had a store at the edge of Aala park, too. It was a soda fountain/ice cream parlor and magazine shop. It did very well and put my uncles to universities on the mainland, Rose Polytech for engineering, Northwestern Law School and University of Michigan for a medical degree. My aunt went to Mills College. And my dad went to Yen Ching University in Beijing .
