everydaytaichi background
I was born and raised in East Honolulu on the island of Oahu, Hawaii and where I currently reside. Here, is where I also have my everydaytaichi classes.
It is not only a very special time in my life to be active in the community that I know so well, but it is especially rewarding to have as friends and students people whom I've known throughout the period when my children were very young.
My contacts have included friends, neighbors, as well as distant relatives from Kuliouou where I grew up, as well as, those in the Aina Haina and Niu Valley community where my children went to school and played neighborhood sports.
The meeting of many new friends have been very stimulating and rewarding as we continue to meet others from prior experiences. As a young girl I attended both Aina Haina Elementary as well as Niu Valley Intermediate, then onto graduate from St. Andrew's Priory. I earned an elementary education degree from UH-Manoa.
After many years away from home having lived in Denver, Colorado, Portland, Oregon, and Agana, Guam we now live in Niu Valley.
Our children have expanded our social base which include families also from Iolani and Mid Pacific Schools. Our trips to the mainland to visit them in Los Angeles, San Mateo and Boston and now on Maui, have given us more time to do Tai Chi in other locales which we share here on our website.
After retiring from Hahaione Elementary School in 2002, I was introduced to Luk Tung Kuen at Kahala Mall by a neighbor who also was an avid walker like me. My interest in these low impact exercises expanded as I attended classes in Chinatown and was fortunate to have had Verna as my mentor. She groomed me to take over her classes at the Cultural Plaza as well as at Lanakila Senior Center where I volunteered my time teaching to many students. Verna was also instrumental in introducing me to Master Ding Ting Wong who certified me in 2003. I now co-teach with Lulu at sites located in East Honolulu. Besides teaching Luk Tung Kuen at Kahala Mall, Hawaii Kai Towne Center, Chinatown as well as Lanakila Senior Center, I also volunteered as the English Secretary for Luk Tung Kuen Association Hawaii.
My goal was to first learn and become proficient in Luk Tung Kuen and then learn Tai Chi. In 2003, I started taking Yang Style Tai Chi classes at Kapaolono Park under Master Wu. Soon after, I transitioned into private lessons with him. When Master Wu retired from teaching in 2007, the Park Director asked me to teach Tai Chi and keep the classes active. I was very honored to be asked to teach Tai Chi and said that I would teach only if Master Wu thought I could. Master Wu gave his approval, and I have been teaching Tai Chi since 2007 at Kapaolono Park through the City and County Parks Department. In the fall of 2010 we moved over to Kilauea District Park where we currently have four tai chi classes as well as our non-instructional session.
My classes continue to grow and everydaytaichi classes are available 5 times/week at various parks between Hawaii Kai and Kahala. (Please see my class schedule under the Classes tab for updated information.)
My entire family has been constant supporters and valuable advisors in my mission to teach Tai Chi. In 2009, on our way home from Europe, Susan brainstormed and came up with a unique name for our website: everydaytaichi.org. My family has not only encouraged me to develop my own website but they advise me on how best to expand and reach out to as many people as I can. Also, my husband has been a big help in broadening my Tai Chi knowledge and skills. He has also been a valuable teaching assistant and actively teaches now that he has been retired. His expertise in the medical field is an asset in understanding how our bodies work as we teach and learn tai chi.
Creating my own website has added a new dimension to continue to be a life long learner. To be able to learn to design my website as well as to develop movies and DVD's all have been challenging but very rewarding.
It seems as though all things come together just the way Tai Chi brings out the best in you. My website banner and logo were custom designed by a top graphic artist in Honolulu. Leio is a good friend we met at Master Wu’s Tai Chi class and he creatively designed my everydaytaichi logo.
It is with deep respect for Master Wu and with passion and zeal for the art of Tai Chi that I continue the style that I learned from my Master. Each day, and in the best and purest way possible, I try to perfect and teach others the movements Master Wu taught me. I would like to reach out to as many who are interested in learning Tai Chi.
Chun and her husband, Dr. Kenneal Chun, 73, a retired physician, began delving into tai chi in 1997. Their son, Dr. Leslie Chun (vice president, medical staff services/chief quality officer at The Queen’s Medical Center), had completed a four-month stint as a guest lecturer at Kunming Medical University in China’s Yunnan Province that year. While there, he discovered tai chi, and when he returned home he encouraged his parents to try it.
Lucille Lo Chun and Kenneal Chun had heard of tai chi but had never seen it being practiced. Interest piqued after listening to their son’s experiences and watching his routines. They tried unsuccessfully to find classes on Oahu at that time.
