Our trip to central Europe in August 2009 was most memorable because we traveled with Les and Susan. From Honolulu we flew first to Boston and met them. Then, off to Prague, the Czech Republic, then rode a train to Vienna, Austria and finally to Budapest, Hungary.
In Prague we stayed in a quaint and friendly Bed and Breakfast Inn that was in walking distance to the river where we saw many different types of architecture. Some buildings looked very Medieval and others very ornate. Tourists are still plentiful as Prague is an attraction since the fall of the Iron Curtain. The historical architecture says is all at the Old Town Square where we saw the famous Astronomical Clock where the 12 Apostles make their debut. The Jewish Synagogue and ghettos were all very interesting as were the cobbled stone lanes, and swans swimming in the lakes. Sites such as the majestic Castles really added a special flavor to this city that came alive with cultural arts and of course, their hearty meat and potato meals.
Onto Vienna, Austria. Here, we experienced an elegant city where we toured the famous Opera House and even got to try on some wigs! The city welcomed us with wide boulevards and rotaries and trolley rides much to our excitement. We enjoyed the Weiner Schnitzel at a famous pub, tasted apfelstrudels and sauerkraut with dinners of beer and wine. Musicians serenaded us too. We enjoyed the Schonbrun and Hapsburg Castles which were the highlights of our trip.
Our train ride took us through the country side and small towns Budapest. Here, we experienced another beautiful city on the banks of the Danube River with Buda Castle on the hillside. We were in awe of the Cathedrals, bridges, and buildings as they were masterpieces of World Heritage architecture of Gothic, Baroque, and rich Art Nouveau. We enjoyed teh street cafes as well as the fine dining. It is a city that has blossomed after the Iron Curtain. We also experienced the famous thermal baths!! Our great finale was just outside of our hotel, a spectacular aerial display of propeller racing planes doing tricks under the bridge and skimming the water!
Tai Chi in Europe, on the grounds of the Castles in the gardens along side ancient ruins, was truly an unforgettable experience~
